Group leaders meet during the grant orientation.

The East Durham Children’s Initiative is extremely proud of and impressed by a group of 10 neighborhood moms awarded a 2019 Neighborhood Matching Grant from the City of Durham. The parents, engaged within the EDCI community and its two-generational programming, will launch their self-designed project, “Mamas por una mejor educacion” (Moms for a Better Education), in the upcoming weeks.

Writing to EDCI CEO & President David Reese, the “Mamas por una mejor educacion” group described its goal as improving parents’ understanding and use of computers in order to better support children’s education. Over a period of two to three months, parents will receive computer education courses while their children learn and play in provided childcare. The project was organized with the support of EDCI Family Advocate Maria Mejia and Carmen Ortiz from the City of Durham.
