East Durham Children's Initiative is committed to building a healthy East Durham. To combat food insecurity, the EDCI Summer Lunch program provides free, nutritious meals on Mondays-Fridays from 12 PM to 2 PM at Maureen Joy Charter School. In addition to meals, EDCI Summer Lunch offers enrichment activities for children and families that have included exercise, story hours, games, gardening, and arts & crafts!
In collaboration with PORCH Durham, Summer Lunch attendees receive weekend food bags, as part of their Backpack Buddies program -- which distributes non-perishable food over weekends and summertime when there is limited or no access to free and reduced meals through schools.
EDCI Summer Lunch is critical in reducing summertime food insecurity for East Durham families, particularly as 80-99% of students in the EDCI Zone are eligible for free and reduced lunch, or other food assistance programs, during the school year. In the summer of 2018, more than 2,500 meals were served at Summer Lunch to East Durham community members.
