Each summer, EDCI offers healthy meals and enrichment activities to East Durham families through its free Summer Lunch program. The program is offered at Maureen Joy Charter School on Monday-Fridays. EDCI partners with the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS) to provide hot daily meals, with PORCH-NC providing weekend food bags for families and more than 200 summer campers.
EDCI Summer Lunch is critical for reducing summertime food insecurity for East Durham families. Two of EDCI’s target elementary schools in the EDCI Zone, Y.E. Smith and Eastway, have Free and Reduced Lunch rates of 100%, demonstrating significant food insecurity in the neighborhood. Additionally, more than one-third of participants in EDCI’s community assessment (March 2014) indicated they worried about having enough food for their families at least a few times per month. This concern increases during the summer months when food assistance programs offered through schools are unavailable.
