EDCI Community Engagement Team

The EDCI Community Engagement Team gets the word out about EDCI programs, ensures participation, and provides resident input in strategic planning and operations.

EDCI Healthy Living Initiative

The EDCI Healthy Living Initiative helps ensure that EDCI children are focused and ready to learn because they are also a healthy weight for their height and age, physically fit, and their diets are nutritionally complete throughout the year.  

EDCI recreational activites

EDCI sponsors various recreational opportunities for youth in the Zone in partnership with Durham Parks and Recreation and other community partners.

EDCI Little Libraries and book giveaways

Free Little Libraries are located throughout the EDCI Zone. EDCI also distributes free books to families during home visits, at the EDCI offices, and at community events.

EDCI Summer Lunch

EDCI Summer Lunch is a summer program available to all East Durham families. The goal of the program is to reduce food insecurity for children in the EDCI Zone during summer months, when families are unable to access meal support through school-based programs. 


ESOL Classes

EDCI and the Durham Literacy Center offer ESOL classes for adults living in the EDCI Zone to help reduce language barriers within the community.

Job Training

Dress for Success

Works with women to provide professional attire from the Dress for Success boutique, job training, leadership, employment retention, and career-searching support groups.

Community Engagement

Habitat for Humanity Durham

Durham Habitat for Humanity helps create opportunities for home ownership with new and renovated houses in the Zone and 0% home loans for qualifying families.

Village of Wisdom

Village of Wisdom works with organizations and families in the community to support their children’s development and self-esteem. 

REAL Durham

REAL Durham matches each family in poverty with four volunteers who meet weekly with the family for 18 months. REAL Durham promotes investment of social capital in families who live in poverty to provide pathways to economic self-sufficiency.


Through the EMPWR U program, the Durham Regional Financial Center provides families with guidance on money management, preparation for homeownership, and tactics to build emergency savings. 

Health and Wellness

Mobile Farmer's Markets

Mobile Farmers Markets offer free fruits and vegetables to food-insecure residents in the Triangle through the Mobile Markets Program. A mobile market is available to EDCI families every third Saturday of the month at El Buen Pastor Episcopal Church on Liberty Street.

Holton Wellness Clinic

Holton Wellness Clinic provides comprehensive primary care for children and adults. The clinic is located on the first floor of Holton Career and Resource Center.
